Vodafone ebook reader

If it's indeed Vodafone, this would be awesome cool. Think about travelling. In future, when you pick a beach for your next summer vacation, only make sure that it's in a country with Vodafone connectivity. Actually, this makes sense. Vodafone its the only operator who could provide "almost" global coverage in Europe, this would mean Amazon only has to negotiate and sign one deal.

To my knowledge no other operator is in this position in Europe. Not to mention that operator fragmentation would complicate manufacturing and distribution. So at the very least the rumor has some credibility. I'm also thinking that in Europe Amazon could even have the final customer buy or use a SIM and pay for bandwidth. Although that is unlikely, it could be the easiest way for them to expand.

If Amazon is really moving that fast, it would also mean that it has secured global distribution rights for kindle titles. Good news indeed. Has iRex got the exclusive rights for Europe?

Indonesia will stop in and Pakistan in Suffice to say, I have not mentioned every country and their shutdown dates, for the ones I missed, there are a bunch of great sites that list the 3G sunset dates.

Quite recently, Amazon had a global coverage map , that listed all of their carrier partners for the 3G Kindles. They also listed about countries, where people could connect to 3G and buy digital content. It seems in the past few months, Amazon has disabled this coverage map and all of the links point to error pages.

Many of the Kinde help files still have links to these coverage maps and no longer work. Examples include the Kindle Paperwhite. I only found this out, by doing research for my story. Was the list outdated or was it deliberately taken down after I write about my original story about the US 3G network being shutdown a couple of days ago?

I think Amazon never really considered the possibility that network operators all over the world will be shutting down their 3G networks and management appears to be asleep at the wheel. Very soon, millions upon millions of Kindle e-readers with 3G internet will no longer be able to connect through the Whispernet network. By the way, how would the user access the book content if it is offer by Vodafone?

Will they support Mobipocket or Fictionwise? It seems that the chances of seeing the device with Mobipocket format will be quite small since Mobipocket is controlled by Amazon. Earlier in the news, the talks between Amazon and Vodafone selling Kindle in Germany was suspended??? I wonder which platform they will be going with though, since there is no real german ebook market yet. Libri seems a likely choice, they are pushing the Sony Reader and might be willing to expand to the new device.

More interesting might be who is going to provide the hardware. I'm placing my bets on Netronix, but who knows No go for Amazon. All times are GMT The time now is PM. Mark Forums Read. Vodafone Germany with new eBook-Reader. User Name. Remember Me? Tip Got Facebook?
